Creative director Shanan Campanaro unveils her five dreamiest island destinations whose scenery, colors, and cultures have sparked Eskayel patterns through the years.

Sumba

Sumba

The most amazing place I’ve ever been, with the clearest blue water and whitest sand beaches. So, so beautiful with people who, up until a few years ago, still lived without electricity the same way as their ancestors did. I spent my fortieth birthday at NIHI Sumba, one of the only places to stay on the island.

Gili Meno

Gili Meno

A tiny Island off of the coast of Lombok. When Nick and I got married there 11 years ago, it was hardly inhabited. I’m sure it’s changed and been built up like the neighboring islands, but I’ll forever remember it as it was when we visited. We stayed at Biru Meno and had our ceremony under the trees by the sea.

San Pedro

San Pedro

This is the largest island off the coast of Belize. You can snorkel and dive in marine parks teeming with underwater wildlife. The sunsets are stunning and you take little boat taxis down the island for transportation. We stayed in a house – I recommend checking Airbnb for options.

San Blas

San Blas

This string of thousands of teardrop islands in the sea is inhabited by the Kuna people who make beautiful mola textiles and adorn themselves with colorful bracelets. I recommend hiring a catamaran or boat charter and sailing for a few days. You’ll end up on islands that are either deserted entirely or inhabited by one family in charge of the coconut bounty.

Bali

Bali

The quintessential tropical isle. It isn’t always as beautiful as it used to be, but it’s still amazing with its rice-paddy-filled interior and less crowded western and northern coasts. Find the soul of Bali and its deeply rooted Hindu culture by skipping Seminyak and heading north to Balian Beach or Pemuteran. We stayed at Gaja Mina on our honeymoon.
