Product Variation

Due to the bespoke and small batch nature of our products, variations can occur. Fluctuations in the digital printing process, textures of woven natural fibers, and small custom dying of yarn are all issues that can contribute to variation, but also offer a "one of kind" feeling to your product. We strive to retain a standard consistency but allowances are made for up to a 10% tolerance of variation.Color & Scale

***Please note that colors shown on the website are a representation only. Please refer to the actual product sample. ***
***Due to varying ink/print systems and material lots, wallpapers and fabrics of the same pattern are not always an exact match in color or scale.***

Materials

Papers

Wood pulp fibers for our PRIMA and WIDE FORMAT paper come from Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood harvesting and pulping operations. The paper mill that produces this paper uses little fresh water, internally recycling and reusing over 99% of the water required for paper making. What little water that does get discharged to the town waste treatment plant has nearly all solids removed from it by filtration before being discharged to the town waste treatment plant. No VOC’s are discharged to the atmosphere from the paper mill.
Under typical commercial landfill conditions, this paper breaks down quickly and naturally as microorganisms consume the cellulose wood pulp fibers. In contrast, PVC vinyl wallcoverings can take decades to break down and release powerful toxic compounds.

Our Classic papers are manufactured with responsibly-sourced, elemental chlorine free fiber, and all suppliers adhere to one of the globally recognized forestry or chain of custody programs including Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), program for the Endorsement of Forestry Certification (PEFC) and Canadian Standards Association. Our paper supplier is both an ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 certified company, and creates approximately 50% of its electricity by low-impact hydroelectric generators and has been designated by the EPA as a National Performance Track Company. 100% of the mill’s short paper fiber is reclaimed and used in the agricultural industry for nutrient rich compost or animal bedding.

Our contract wall covering is an eco-friendly commercial grade wall covering which contains a minimum of 31% post-consumer recycled content. With Type II durability, a Class A fire rating, and low VOC emissions, this wall covering contributes to improved air quality, is recyclable, and can contribute towards the earning of up to 6 LEEDs credits.

Grasscloth

Our Grasscloth wall coverings are hand woven by skilled weavers in an entirely eco-friendly process. Sustainable, renewable fibers are sun-dried and backed with chemical-free cotton paper making the grasscloth breathable, VOC-free and completely biodegradable.

Inks

All Eskayel products are digitally printed with water based inks rather than hand screened with solvent ink. The digital printing process eliminates the issue of runoff which is the most detrimental aspect of the fabric and wallpaper printing process, as opposed to traditional screened printing which using solvent inks is the one of the most detrimental aspects of wallpaper production.

Our PRIMA wallpaper is printed using a a UV cured, aqueous pigment ink system which is non-toxic and VOC free.

Our WIDE FORMAT, Classic papers and contract wall covering are printed digitally using the HP Latex aqueous pigment ink system which is non-toxic and VOC free.

Our Fabric printing process uses a water based, ultra low VOC ink system, and the print facility is optimized to contribute as little waste, water usage, and electricity as possible The nature of the digital printing process eliminates waste ink run-off and all print finishing is done using heat and pressure process rather than chemical binding.

Fabrics

Eskayel uses Libeco Lagae 100% Belgian linen exclusively, which is harvested and manufactured in Belgium under the some of the most stringent agricultural standards on the globe. Libeco has become a completely carbon neutral company, which is quite a feat for a fabric mill with over 80 double width looms and climate controlled facilities.

Flax is "green" by nature. Flax has been cultivated for thousands of years, and always with great respect for the environment. Flax is a plant that grows naturally, and needs very few chemicals. Few or no fertilizers and/or crop protection products are being used compared to other crops. Flax does not require irrigation during the growing process. The flax plant is gentle on the land and is easy to incorporate into modern crop rotation cycles. The processing of flax needs very little energy and does not harm nature. The water retting process has been replaced by environmentally friendly dew-retting on the field.

Flax has some inherent ecological characteristics: all parts of the plant are used (there is no waste) and are 100% biodegradable or recyclable. Flax seed is beneficial in human and animal nutrition because of its very high content of alpha omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seeds can be used as the base for a fine flour used in medical compresses. Linseed oil, squeezed out of flax seeds, is also used as a component in paints, cosmetics, soil coverings, etc. Flax fibers are also being used in heat insulation, packaging, etc. The remaining residual products are used in fiber boards, bank notes, etc. The inherent strength of linen yarn reduces the need for starching during spinning and weaving. Linen fabrics can be recycled into paper and insulation materials for the car industry.

One of the most critical steps in the production process of linen in terms of ecology is the washing, bleaching, dyeing and finishing of the fabrics. A lot of water is being used to clean and dye the fabrics. The finisher of our linens has heavily invested in order to minimize water consumption and meet all environmental standards.

The processes are continuously reviewed in order to:
— minimize total water consumption and optimize water recycling during the processes,
– reduce total energy consumption and optimize energy recuperation from the effluents,
– reduce the use of harmful chemicals in line with the most severe standards:
1. only water based chemicals are being used during production.
2. bleaching agents based on chloride have been fully replaced by agents based on oxygen such as peroxide.
3. dye selection is fully in line with the EC Directive 76/769/EEC banning prohibited azo dyes that release carcinogenic amine compounds (MAK Group III 1,2,3) and according to the ETAD standard minimizing any possible adverse impact of organic colorants on health and environment, based on the principles of responsible care.

Our organic cotton denim fabric is produced in strict accordance with Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) containing at last 95% organic material, and prohibiting the use of critical inputs such as toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nano-particles, genetically modified organisms (GMO) and their enzymes. All whitening process is done using oxygen based compounds (peroxide) and are chloride free.

Installation Guides

Prima Install Guide

Custom Panels
In order to reduce waste and installation time, our PRIMA paper comes in custom panels based on the height of the wall or area which be covered rather than by pattern repeat measurement alone . Panels are created to side match from the top unless otherwise specified and are 24” wide. Panels come UN-TRIMMED with a .25" selvage. Prima Wallpaper Installation Guide

Eskayel highly recommends consultation with a professional paperhanger prior to installation.
These instructions are for our PRIMA standard wallpaper only.

Wall Preparation
Wall should be prepped to a smooth, clean, and dry surface prior to installation. Wallcovering will not hide wall flaws such as: nail holes, bumps, or dirt.

Primer sealer should be used on unpainted drywall. Use acrylic wallcovering primers: Professional Ultra Prime (PRO-977), Golden Harvest White Bite, or Allpro Ultra Prep 685. Priming provides a sound surface that wallcovering will adhere to.

It is recommended to strip down previous layer(s) of wallcovering. The wallcovering may seem to be firmly adhered to the wall, but the addition of another layer can cause adhesion failure.

Prime over glossy paint with one of the above mentioned primers.

Paste Information
Clear adhesives such as Professional Ultra Premium Heavy Duty Clear Strippable (PRO-880), Golden Harvest GH-34 Clear Stripable, and Allpro Pro-Duty 3400 provide good adhesion and allow for easier stripping when the wall covering is to be removed or replaced.

Pastes such as Professional Heavy Duty Clear PRO-838 or Allpro Clear Hang 610 have a more aggressive adhesion and should be used for more permanent applications.

Apply a coat of the adhesive using a 1/2″ nap paint roller. Book for 10 minutes.

Hanging information:
– Do not use tape on imaged surface.
– Table trim selvage at edge of printed area( to bleed).
– Align top and adjoining edges. Smooth panels into place with a smoothing brush, starting at the center of the panel working towards the edges.
– Use a plastic smoother to push air pockets to the edges.
– Remove any and all excess paste from the paper using a lightly damp rag or sponge. Do not use a fully damp sponge as slight running may occur in heavy coverage areas. If any paste is left to dry, flaking may occur which can lead to spots from ink being pulled from the paper.
– Overlapping the seams is not recommended.

Wide Format Install Guide

How to measure the amount of paper to order
We recommend measuring with a yardstick or steel tape measure. Make your measurements in feet and round off to the next half foot or foot. Measure the wall height from the floor to the ceiling, excluding any baseboards or moldings. Then measure the length of the wall without deducting for windows or doors (this will leave you extra wallpaper in case you may need it). Multiply the two measurements to find the surface area of the wall.

Single rolls of this paper are 15 feet long and 33 inches wide. 1 roll covers about 40 square feet. To find the number of rolls needed to cover your wall, multiply the height and the width of the wall by rounding up each length to the nearest foot. Then divide by 40.

Example: For a wall that is 10 feet 6 inches high by 9 feet 4 inches long. Round up and multiply 11 feet by 10 feet to get 110 square feet. Divide 110 by 40 and you will get 2.75. In this case you will need 4 rolls.
If the number divides out to be .5 or above, you will need to add one more roll on to be safe. If you were to get 3.4, 4 rolls would be enough, but if you get 3.5 to 4.4, you will need 5 rolls.
If you are unsure, please contact us before making a purchase.

Grasscloth Install Guide

General guidelines for measuring the amount of paper to order:
We recommend measuring with a yardstick or steel tape measure. Make your measurements in feet and round off to the next half foot or foot. Measure the wall height from the floor to the ceiling, excluding any baseboards or moldings. Multiply the two measurements to find the surface area of the wall.

Single rolls of this paper are 21 feet long and 33 inches wide. 1 roll covers about 57 square feet. To find the number of rolls needed to cover your wall, multiply the height and the width of the wall by rounding up each length to the nearest foot. Then divide by 57.

Example: For a wall that is 10 feet 6 inches high by 14 feet 4 inches long. Round up and multiply 11 feet by 15 feet to get 165 square feet. Divide 165 by 57 and you will get 2.89. In this case you will need 3 rolls. This is because the number divides out to be .5 or above so you will need to add one more roll to be safe. To reiterate, if you get a number 1.5 to 2.4, you will need 3 rolls. If the number had multiplied out to be 1.4, 2 rolls would be enough.

Grasscloth installation guide
Sisal Grasscloth is a complicated material to install and it is best done by an experienced and accredited wallpaper installer. It is imperative that your installer be familiar with the nature and process of installing Grasscloth. Eskayel highly recommends contacting an installer accredited with the Wallcovering Installers Association
These instructions are for our GRASSCLOTH wallcovering only.

Hanging Instructions
* Please note, this product is handmade and woven with natural fibers that give the finished product a certain unevenness.***

Wall Preparations
– Remove old wallcovering and glue if applicable
– Wash walls to remove old paste and other foreign matter.
– Repair wall imperfections with plaster and sand smooth,
– Wash walls with a strong solution of household bleach to kill mold spores and prevent mildew from occurring.
– Prime surface to be wallpapered with a white alkyd base primer sold in your local paint & wallpaper stores. Do not use glue-size.

Installation
I TRIMMING
– Refer to join marks on paper edge for pattern match (half drop/straight match).
– Use trim marks provided to trim excess from edges of paper.

II PASTING
– This wallcovering can be hung BEST with a clear premixed adhesive. Apply paste generously to the
back, edge to edge, smoothly and evenly. Care should be taken not to allow adhesive or water on the wallcovering surface.
– For ease in hanging, we recommend after pasting the complete sheet, that it can be
“booked”(folded back to back) and allowed to soak and relax while you proceed to paste sheet #2.
After the second sheet is pasted and “booked” – then the first sheet can be applied to the wall.

III HANGING
– After cutting the desired length and pasting, position the wallcovering on the wall. Use a
smoothing brush to remove all air pockets, wrinkles and excess paste by brushing the wallcovering
from the center to the edges. Do not use seam rollers, as this can discolor the surface.
– Repeat the procedure with the second strip, sliding it into position with its edge butted up against
the edge of the proceeding strip. Be sure to match up the design. Do not overlap the wallcovering.
– Wash any glue residue from surrounding wood trim/molding immediately upon hanging each panel.
***special care should be taken not to allow water on the wallcovering***

NOTE: This is NOT a washable wallcovering. Use a vacuum only to clean the surface.

Mural Install Guide:

Heavyweight, luxe hand-feel paper. Ultra matte finish to minimize glare. Suitable for residential and low-traffic commercial locations.

PLEASE READ THROUGH BEFORE HANGING. Inspect your wallcovering for defects prior to installation. No claims will be honored after merchandise has been cut or hung. No labor claims will be honored for any reason.

NOTE: The highest quality of workmanship is employed in the production of the wallcovering. Careful inspection is made before shipment, however, final inspection and approval are the ultimate responsibilities of the customer. Correct design, color and quantity should be verified before the wallcovering is cut or hung.

PREP:

Remove all old wallpaper and repair damaged areas. All walls must be smooth, clean, and free of mildew and grease stains. If necessary, apply a stain killing primer. Be sure newly plastered walls have been washed with a zinc sulfate solution. New, unpainted surfaces should be sealed with an oil based primer. Follow up with a high quality wallcovering primer sold in your local paint & wallpaper stores. DO NOT USE GLUE SIZE.

PRO TIP: On all surfaces that are to be papered, we recommend using a universal, pigmented wallcovering primer/sealer such as Shields. The pigment should be the same color as the background color of your wallpaper.

INSTALLATION:

Trimming - Cut the individual panels from the roll. Inspect the panels and make sure they match the panel map included in the roll. Use trim marks provided to trim excess from edges of paper.

Pasting-

This stain-resistant strippable wallcovering can be hung BEST with a clear premixed adhesive. Apply paste generously to the back, edge to edge, smoothly and evenly using a paint roller. Book the paper by loosely folding the pasted sides together without creasing. Align the edges carefully so the paste doesn’t dry out. Gently roll the booked piece to ensure the pasted sides make good contact. Allow to soak and expand for 3-5minutes. Time is subjective to heat or humidity at jobsite.   Don’t allow to soak too long in a dry environment as it may dry out the glue .

Hanging -

Create a plumb line using either a laser or by drawing with a straight edge and level. Use only a lead pencil for marking walls and back of wallcovering. Do not use ballpoint or marking pen as they will bleed through the surface. This will be your guide for positioning the first panel. Position the first panel along the plumb line. Use a smoothing brush to remove all air pockets, wrinkles and excess paste by brushing the wallcovering from the center to the edges. A seam roller can be used to lightly roll edges of paper being careful not to push paste out. Repeat the procedure with the second panel sliding it into position with its edge butted up against the edge of the preceding panel. Do not overlap the panels. Wash any glue residue from surrounding wood trim/molding immediately upon hanging each panel.

USING A CLEAN, DAMP SPONGE, GENTLY W ASH ADHESIVE COMPLETELY FROM THE SURFACE OF THE WALLCOVERING IMMEDIATELY AFTER EACH STRIP IS HUNG. ANY ADHESIVE LEFT ON THE WALLCOVERING CAN, AT A LATER DATE, ATTACK THE SURFACE PRINTED INKS AND CAUSE THEM TO FLAKE.

** This wallpaper is provided on a continuous bolt **

For best results, please CUT AND HANG PANELS IN THE ORDER THAT THEY COME OFF THE BOLT. This provides the most consistent color from panel to panel. Work in one direction around the room, with the first and last panels from the bolt meeting in a corner, doorway, etc. - rather than on a flat wall.
