Wallpaper Installation Guide

100% Silk Wallcovering Installation Instructions

Please read this in full before beginning. Extra care must be taken during installation as this substrate is more susceptible to creasing than traditional wallcovering products.

This hand woven wallcovering has a natural finish that may show some shade variations from strip to strip. Natural fibers may contain some irregularities and imperfections in texture, color, and weave. This is a natural, inherent quality of these materials and should not be considered a defect. These instructions are a general guide only, they cannot cover all surfaces and conditions.

Wall Preparation

The walls to be covered must be properly prepared to ensure that the wallpaper will adhere to the wall surface. Even the strongest adhesive can only work when the wall surface is clean and properly prepared.

Building & Material Conditions

  1. The building must be weather-tight with HVAC settings (including pressure, temperature, and relative humidity) the same as those of an occupied building for three days prior to, throughout installation, and three days after installation.
  2. The walls must be structurally sound including elimination of sources of moisture accumulation into the wall or wall cavity.
  3. The wallcovering must be in a clean and dry condition and must be stored at normal occupied building temperature and humidity for at least three days prior to installation.
  4. All adhesives and primers must be new, good quality, commercial grade materials, which have not been contaminated.

Preparation

  1. Before you cut and hang, please be sure you have:
  2. The correct wallcovering and the correct amount of wallcovering to finish the job.
  3. Inspect the wallcovering carefully to ensure it is free of defects: If no defect is evident before installation, the material should be inspected after three (3) strips are installed. If any defect is evident at this time (or at any point in the installation) no additional material should be hung. NO CLAIMS WILL BE ALLOWED FOR MORE THAN (3) STRIPS ON THE WALL. All claims must be made within 30 days of the invoice date. No labor claims will be allowed at any time.

Adhesive

  1. We recommend using a clay adhesive.
  2. Apply the paste to the back of the paper, which will become flexible and easy to hang.
  3. Do not add excessive water to the paste as it may cause the backing paper to pull away from the front.

Trimming

  1. Please create your own precision edge on your work table or by making a double cut on the wall for the finest seam possible.
  2. Trim edges with a VERY sharp razor blade. CHANGE YOUR BLADES OFTEN.

Installation

  1. Plumb wall for first strip.
  2. Cut strips and allow extra material at the top and bottom for trimming. Hang strips in the same sequence as cut from master roll.
  3. After cutting the strips from two bolts, take a few minutes to shade the strips from light to dark to ensure the most even shading. The installer may reverse strips if they feel that it will produce the most even shading. Once you are satisfied with the shading from the first two bolts, cut and shade the balance of the rolls.
  4. Apply wallcovering to the wall surface, smoothing out all bubbles with a soft brush or cloth.
  5. Do not use wooden or nylon seam roller as this can polish the surface.
  6. For vertical strand quality, smooth out bubbles in a direction parallel to the patterns, while paying attention to the fibers on the surface of the wallcoverings.

Important

  1. DO NOT FOLD this wallcovering while pasting or booking, as it is susceptible to potential wrinkling and creasing.
  2. Use a soft brush or cloth when hanging, so that you do not damage the face of the wallcovering.
  3. DO NOT allow paste or excessive water to stain the front of the wallcovering.
  4. Silk wallcoverings have a natural finish and may show some shade variation from strip to strip. As the wallcovering oxidizes, these variations should soften over time.
  5. Paste, trim, and hang one strip at a time.
  6. Gently smooth the wallcovering using a plastic smoother in the direction of the fiber. Do not use a seam roller.

Sustainability

Our Silk wallcoverings are backed with chemical-free paper making them breathable, VOC-free and completely biodegradable.

Care

Not Wipeable. When cleaning silk wallpaper, the best approach is to lightly dust it or use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment. Avoid using magic eraser sponges, as well as any kind of scrubbing. Silk wallpaper is delicate and cannot tolerate harsh cleaning methods. Using magic eraser sponges or scrubbing will result in damage to the fibers and the design of the wallpaper over time. Avoid using any moisture-based cleaning products as they will damage the fibers and potentially leave unsightly watermarks. If you do need to remove small stains, use a cotton swab and a mild soap and water cleaning solution, taking care to dab gently and not to rub or scrub the wallpaper. Never use solvents or alcohol.

U.S. & International Shipping

All North American shipping is via UPS/ Fedex ground unless otherwise specified, and delivery times vary according to shipping zone. Eskayel cannot be held responsible for delays once the package is in transit. Whenever possible we recycle boxes and packaging material, so if your order comes in a used box think of it as our tiny contribution to saving the planet from more waste. Orders over $100 require a signature unless specifically waived by the end receiver. If signature delivery is waived, Eskayel is released from any and all  liability for missing packages. Fees apply for address changes made after an order has shipped and for returned packages.

Eskayel does ship internationally to most countries around the world. Canada and Mexico are both considered international. We ship with a USMCA certification on all goods. However, orders over $20 sent via commercial carriers (UPS, Fed Ex, DHL, etc) may incur clearing fees and taxes which are the responsibility of the buyer.

Disclaimer: Many countries charge import duties and/or custom’s fees which are the responsibility of the buyer and are paid upon delivery by the buyer. Eskayel cannot estimate these fees as they vary from order to order. If you are unaware if your country charges duties or what the duties will be, please contact your postal authorities to receive more information.

Returns & Exchanges

Eskayel does not accept returns. All of our products are custom made to order, and we highly recommend purchasing samples before ordering larger goods. If you believe your product to be defective and it has not been used or installed, please contact us within 10 days of delivery so we can review your issue.

Product Variation

Due to the bespoke and small batch nature of our products, variations can occur. Fluctuations in the digital printing process, textures of woven natural fibers, and small custom dying of yarn are all issues that can contribute to variation but also offer a one of a kind feeling to our  products. We strive to retain a standard consistency but allowances are made for up to a 10% tolerance of variation.
